So it's been a while, i'm not even sure if anyone reads these but its a nice way to vent. This post is going to be about the way TV shows and the media view asexuality and the lgbt+ community. Let's get started shall we? Let's start with Brooklyn nine nine. During season 2 episode 18 "Captain Peralta" Gina said "Oh, and I'm sorry if we implied you're both asexual nerds who can only be friends with service animals" to insult Amy and Terry. This is so damaging to the community because this is how people come to associate stereotypes like that around the MOGAI (Marginalized Orientations, Gender Alignments, Intersex) community. When you have a popular tv show you have a lot of influence over what the watchers absorb and using harmful jokes like the above don't help anyone. Another TV show that uses harmful jokes is Community. This one is almost a given due to the amount of gay jokes. Personally, with a show like this, the gay jokes just scream "Warning, We're Lazy", if you have to rely on jokes like that it's clear that the writers can't think of original content so they lean on harmful, stereotypical, and overdone jokes. For example, the episode “Advanced Gay,” where the main plot revolved around the bigoted Pierce Hawthorne "accepting" the gay community after his line of moist towelettes becomes very popular with the community. (I'd talk about The Office too but I feel like that's a given). Going over to the popular Netflix show Riverdale, I've noticed that Riverdale writers just...don't know how to write queer characters in a good way. They erased Jugheads asexuality which was introduced in the Archie comics in 2016/2017 but somehow the show writers are totally fine with writing bisexual characters. In my opinion it seems like the writers don't want an asexual character, mostly due to the fact that having a non-sexual character in an angst-y teen drama wouldn't be well received. But even with the bisexual (now canon as lesbian) character the writing with her is still problematic, once Cheryl Blossom had a crush on a girl she became stalker-y and possessive about someone she didn't even express her feeling towards. They wrote a lesbian teen as a possessive, no-boundary, and borderline psychopathic character. As well as them putting in a scene where Betty and Veronica kiss but only for the attention/shock value. And when it doesn't work the punchline is that "faux-lesbian kissing isn’t shocking anymore". In that case, since faux-lesbian kissing is so passe, shouldn't jokes about it be too? Queer characters need better representation.This article by the Huffington post also highlights other T.V shows that use gay stereotypes as a plot, go check it out.) Now i'm going to switch gears and go to music, specifically Eminem. WARNING SLURS . . . . . “But I may fight for gay rights, especially if that dyke is more of a knockout than Janay Rice/Play nice?" “That I’ll still be able to break a motherfuckin’ table/Over the back of a couple of faggots and crack it in half" "My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge/That’ll stab you in the head whether you’re a fag or lez" This is just so much to unpack. He's been called out for using slurs multiple times and his defense for these is that when people have a problem with him and his songs it's because he's white and that's why there's such an uproar. Which has me rolling my eyes as far back into my head as possible. He doesn't understand that it's because he's using homophobic slurs and threatening them with physical violence. Lyrics like these promote violence against the gay community which in turn make people think that it's okay...and it's not. It never was, and never will be. Of all the rappers/singers that have been "cancelled" this over the years, Eminem should really be one. So to wrap things up here;
Here all week folks, Sam
